How to Train Your Puppy to Guard Your Flat

You should accustom your puppy to react to an attempt of a stranger to unlock the door and to alarm its owner (trainer) and members of its family. Your pup must react to people passing by your flat or entering nearest flats calmly without alarm. A flat can be guarded by a dog with silent informing or bark alarm.

Silent Informing

A dog trainer’s helper (a stranger, who must be instructed in advance about all his/her actions) comes to the outer flat door, slightly knocks it. He or she puts the key into the door lock, turns it and then pushes the door bell. As soon as the puppy reacts to this and runs to the door, the trainer comes to the door with it and pats it saying “Good boy” or “Good girl”.

If the puppy starts barking, the trainer cuts barking short with the “Stop!” command. If it continues barking, jerk it slightly with the collar. The helper stops actions and leaves. The trainer gets the puppy out of the hall, pats it saying “Good boy” or “Good girl”, takes its front left paw with his/her right hand and touches his/her leg with it two-three times, and then gives treats to the puppy. You should repeat the exercise one-two times after five-six minutes long break.

The exercises become more difficult as far as first skills are worked out. The helper makes noise only without ringing. Other stranger is asked to help the trainer. After the puppy rushes to the door because of noise that the helper produces, the trainer stays in the room and pats saying “Good boy” or “Good girl”, and gives it treats only when it runs up to him/her and touches his/her leg. The helper goes away after the exercise ends. The trainer acts in the same way when the acquainted people come with the only difference - he/she lets them in.

Bark Alarm

The trainer’s helper comes to the outer flat door and makes the same actions as for silent informing. After that the trainer comes to the puppy at the door and commands “Bark!” to it, provoking it to bark. Then he/she pats it saying “Good boy” or “Good girl”, and gives it treats. You should repeat the exercise two-three times after five-six minutes long break. If the puppy starts barking at once, you don’t have to give it “Bark!” command.
Some puppies are excited and react to people passing by your flat or entering the nearest flats. Such unwanted actions must be cut short with the “Stop!” command. If it is not effective enough, you can jerk the collar.
