What Dog Obedience Test Consist of

 

Dog obedience is a variant of international dog training rules. Its standards were set in 1996 by FCI. There are 10 trials to check dog skills.

 

Trial 1 – Sitting in a group for 2 min

 

Commands
“Sit”, “Place”
How the exercise is done
The dogs sit in a row at the distance of 3 m from each other. The handlers are out of the field of dogs vision.
Remarks
There must be at least 3 animals in one dog obedience group. The dog that sits, lays or moves more than 1 time to the length of its body, gets 0 points.

Trial 2 – Lying in a group for 4 min with distraction

 

Commands
“Down”, “Sit”, “Place”
How the exercise is done
The dogs lie in a row at the distance of 3 m from each other. The handlers are out of the field of dogs vision. The dogs must lie for 4 minutes. They are distracted during this time: for example, a person goes near them. When 4 minutes are passed, the handlers come back and stand 3 m behind the dogs. Then they come to their dogs and give a command to take the basic position.
Remarks
There must be at least 3 animals in one dog obedience group. The dog that stays, sits or crawls more then 1 time to the length of its body, fails. The dogs that moves several times to the length less than its body or whimper cannot get more than 8 points.

A Dog and a Handler Must Have a Bond

Trial 3 – Free walking at heel

Commands
“Heel”, can be given while every changing of speed.
How the exercise is done
The dog without a lead follows handler at the left side, its head is at the level of his left knee. Speed is changed, turns to the various directions and about-face are done by order of the judge. The dog must immediately take the basic position without the command after stopping. The handler must move naturally with his hands in motion during the whole exercise.
Remarks
The motion plan must include at least 2 stops in normal and slow speed, 2 about-faces at the normal pace, one about-face at slow pace and one about-face at pace with double speed, 2 left turns and 2 right turns at every pace, 2-3 steps in the different directions after stopping.
All the dogs do this exercise according to one scheme.
If the dog follows the handler more than 50 cm behind during the most time of the exercise or leaves him, the trial is considered to be failed for this dog.

Trial 4 – Sit, stand and down from motion

 

Commands
“Stand”, “Down”, “Sit”, “Heel” (4 times)
How the exercise is done
The exercise is done at footpace with moving about the square of 10x10 m. The dog is between the handler and the supposed border of the square (left turns)
Remarks
The dog must keeps the basic position. If it changes the position (from “Sit” to “Down”, for example), the score cannot be more than 7 points.
In order to gain points in this exercise the dog must perform at least 2 required positions.

A Dog Must Keep a Basic Position

Trial 5 – Recall with stopping and lying

 

Commands
“Down”, “Place”, “Come” (3 times), “Stand” (with voice or gestures)
How the exercise is done
The dog lies, the handler turns away at the distance of 25 m. The handler recalls the dog by the judge’s order. When 1/3 of the distance is gone, the handler gives the “Stand” command. The handler recalls the dog again by the judge’s order and when 2/3 of the distance is passed, the handler gives the “Down” command. Then the handler recalls the dog once more and it takes the basic position.
Remarks
It is important that the dog must enjoy doing the exercise. If the handler repeats the command more than 3 times, the dog does not get more than 6 points. The dog should not move more than to 3 lengths of its body after a given command before performance. The dog must move with good speed, not slower than trot. If the dog does not sit or does not lie or do the commands incorrectly, it gets 0 points. The dog must not start moving from any position before a command. If it occurs, it cannot get more than 7 points.
